BANGUI – A few weeks after mid-July agreement to end hostilities, a leader of the Central African Republic Seleka rebels has declared an independent state in the northeastern region of the country, in what he described as a response to the genocide perpetrated against Muslims at the hands of Christian militias..
"A free, independent secular state has been established in the northeastern region of CAR," Noureddine Adam, the deputy head of the militia, said in a statement cited by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, August 17.
According to Adam, the new “state” lies some 800 kilometers north of CAR capital Bangui.
It would be led by former CAR president Michel Djotodia, a Muslim.
Adam also announced the creation of an interim government under Djotodia in which he would serve as minister of state for defense and national security. It would be led by former CAR president Michel Djotodia, a Muslim.
He said the secession move came in response to what he described as "planned genocide" and "hostage-taking" of Muslims; the destruction of mosques; and the desecration of Qur’an by Christian militias, including the anti-balaka.
Over the past months, anti-balaka Christian militias have raided Muslim homes killing children and women and looting and vandalizing properties.
Along with killing, kidnapping, torture and arbitrary arrest and detention, in the war-torn CAR, a UN investigation found evidences of sexual violence.
Inter-religious violence has claimed thousands of lives and displaced a million people in the population of 4.6 million, yet such clashes are unprecedented in the poor, landlocked country.
Requests of formalizing the partition were suggested for several times months ago as a simple solution after the fleeing of tens of thousands of Muslims to the north.
