Nepali Muslims Forced into Family Planning

OnIslam & News Agencies

Similar claims have been increasingly made in the media in the Hindu country which praised these plans in the name of economic well-being.
KATHMANDU – Several Nepali Muslim leaders have complained that non-governmental organizations were forcing Muslim families, particularly women, to use contraceptives and abortions or lost chances of getting humanitarian aid or free educationfor their children.
"This is despicable, it goes against our faith and exploits our poverty,” Hassan Miya, a Muslim leader from Banke district, told AsiaNews.
"The Muslims who live in the remote districts of Nepal are very poor, and in our society dominated by Hindus are ostracized in many different ways,” he added.
Need for humanitarian aid was not the only problem facing Nepali Muslims as the leader went on to describe their calamity for facing the possibility of denying their children an  education if they opposed NGOs’ family planning methods.
“The worst thing is that they cannot afford to pay school fees for their children: NGOs arrive, offering money and free education but in return they impose family planning. From my point of view it is a conspiracy against the country's minorities," Miya added.
Similar claims have been increasingly made in the media in the Hindu country which praised these plans in the name of economic well-being.
This policy has been made clear in an article shared by a Nepalese newspaper on the area of Bajura.
"Muslim women believed that planning was a shame, but those of the district of Bajura have realized that it is not. Though Islam prohibits the use of contraceptives many women of this place have challenged this prejudice," the article reads.
Facing rising Muslim complaints, Health Minister, Gopal Parajuli, promiseed that he will investigate the issue.
"The free health and education programs should not affect the religious beliefs of anyone. I will open an investigation, also because NGOs can work only if they comply with the laws and are accepted by the society," he said.
Islam encourages its followers to marry, procreate, and populate the earth. Yet, it allows family planning and the use of contraception as long as the conditions set by Islam in this regard are observed.
Family planning is allowable as long as the method employed is not irreversible as the case in vasectomy for example.
According to the CIA World Fact Book, Muslims constitute 4.2 percent of Nepal’s 28-million population.
Nepal was the world's only Hindu state till 2006 when the parliament amended the constitution and declared it a secular state.
Most of Nepal's Muslims live in the southern plains on the borders with India.
Residents of impoverished southern belt say they have long been excluded from Kathmandu's corridors of power and want increased representation in the government and army.

Netherland’s Rising Islamic Party

By Nourdeen Wildeman-
Muslim Revert - The Netherlands

“We don’t feel victimized but let our voice be heard, in society and in local politics. We are not guests in Rotterdam, we are Rotterdam,” el Ouali.
ROTTERDAM – Bringing nearly 10 thousand pro-Gaza protesters to the streets, a recently formed Islamic party has appeared as a new political force in Netherlands, with a new ambition to grow in the national politics.
“During the second world war, the city of Rotterdam was occupied by German forces and bombarded repeatedly until it was fully destroyed. From a historical perspective, we can relate to what the people in Gaza are going through,” Nourdin el Ouali, member of the city council in Rotterdam, told OnIslam.net in an exclusive interview.
NIDA, his political party, was the main organizer behind the largest pro-Gaza demonstration in the Netherlands which drew some 10 thousand protesters to the street.
“We aim to do more than just protest; we really want to reach out to the people in Gaza and support the rebuilt of their city as well.”
The protest against Israeli aggression on Gaza saw the first major appearance for the relatively new political party in the Netherlands which won two out of the 45 seats in city council during this year’s election.
Gaining support from Muslim and non-Muslims as well, NIDA-led protest gave a powerful support to the Gazans case against injustice and international negligence.
“When we organized the pro-Gaza demonstrations earlier this month, we were able to draw a crowd exceeding ten thousand people, and not just Muslims,” el Ouali said.
“This is an important fact, because our aim is to draw focus to the importance of adherence to international law and justice.”
“Also, the route of the protest march including crossing the river ‘De Maas’ using the landmark Erasmus-bridge. Watching so many people from all different background crossing this well-known bridge proved to a very powerful image, both literally and figuratively speaking. We aim to cross the bridge between Rotterdam and Gaza as well.”
For almost two months, Israel launched relentless airstrikes against Gaza where more than 2,100 have been killed and thousands injured before announcing a ceasefire last August 26.
According to UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), about 80% of deaths in Gaza are civilians, including dozens of children and women.
The large scale of mass destruction in Gaza has left about 5,510 homes completely destroyed and about 31,000 partially damaged, forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes that were caught up in the Israeli air strikes.
The war sparked huge protests across the world, with protesters staging protests from Jakarta, Indonesia to Berlin, Germany in condemnation of Israel's offensive on Gaza.
Expanding
The fact that el Ouali is part of local politics doesn’t withhold him from addressing international topics.
“The city of Rotterdam is home to people with over 170 different nationalities. Everything that happens all over the world is connected to people that live here. The people who voted for us care greatly about the Palestinian cause,” he told OnIslam.net.
But there is also a strong personal motivation to support Gaza.
“I was part of the flotilla that attempted to reach Gaza in 2011. I have always felt connected to the Palestinian cause. I remember watching my mother cry in front of the television when I was just a six year old boy.
“Nowadays I don’t see any politicians on national level who really speak out for the Palestinian people, so that’s why local politicians take that moral obligation upon ourselves.”
The party leader revealed plans to accept Gaza as a sister-city of Rotterdam.
“NIDA is right now working on a proposal to accept Gaza as a sister-city of Rotterdam, like many other cities are. This would mean we commit ourselves to supporting the rebuild of Gaza for the upcoming years,” el Ouali said.
“The city of Rotterdam has been fully bombarded in the second world war but – with the help of others – was completely rebuild and grew to one of the biggest harbors in the world. Now it’s time we help others to do the same, for instance to support Gaza to expand and improve its harbor as well.”
The pro-Gaza protests also mark a transition in the presence of Muslims in the Netherlands and how they can be viewed.
“We don’t call ourselves a Islamic political party, because we don’t want to limit our target audience to only Muslims. We aim to serve all people in Rotterdam, based on the inspiration we take from the Qur’an,” el Ouali explained.
“We aim to achieve our objectives well within the boundaries of this country’s constitution while we seek to realize the Islamic core values.”
“When we are able to mobilize so many people, it shows we are no longer a group that can simply be ignored. We are now well organized and able to deliver a peaceful and strong response to the injustice we witness in the world around us,” el Ouali said.
“The people that voted us in have seen a huge gap between the political discourse and the actual reality within our society. While politicians still treat Muslims or ethnic minorities as second class citizens which still need to prove they are part of this society, in reality Muslims are already fully part of the multicultural and very diverse population which has been shaping the society we live in for years.
“We don’t feel victimized but let our voice be heard, in society and in local politics. We are not guests in Rotterdam, we are Rotterdam.”

A new count of the population of Norway's capital city Oslo has revealed that Mohammad, the name of Islam’s Prophet, is the most common name for the first time ever in the European capital’s history.
“It is very exciting,” Jørgen Ouren of Statistics Norway (Statistisk Sentralbyrå - SSB) told NRK, the Local.no reported on Thursday, August 28.
The survey was made by SSB for the male names in Oslo.
The results found that 4,801 boys and men are named Mohammed or variations of Mohammed as their first name.
Therefore, Muhammed has passed both Jan (4,667) and Per (4,155).
The name has spent four years in a row at the top of the list of baby names in Oslo, but this is the first time that Mohammed tops the men's name list for Oslo.
Similar results were revealed in Britain after statistics found that the name Mohammad, or its variations, has topped the list of the baby names.
The estimates showed that the Muslim name was the most multi-cultural London and the West Midlands, while Oliver came out top in the South East, South West and Wales.
Norwegian Muslims are estimated at 150,000 out of the country's 4.5 million population, mostly of Pakistan, Somali, Iraqi and Moroccan backgrounds.
There are nearly 90 Muslim organizations and Islamic centers across the northern European country.

Muslim female flight attendants working with Malaysia Airlines (MAS) should be given the option to wear the hijab, suggested Umno Youth.
“Those who wish to cover their aurat should be allowed to do so,” said the movement’s head Khairy Jamaluddin while chairing an Umno Youth exco meeting yesterday.
A local daily reported that Umno Youth exco member Dazma Shah Daud had urged MAS to make it compulsory for Muslim female flight attendants to wear the hijab, and that the airline should stop serving alcohol.
Dazma, however, clarified his earlier statement, saying what he had meant was that those who want to wear the syariah compliant attire should be allowed to do so as some Muslim flight attendants were already donning the hijab when they were not flying.
He said the practice of banning the hijab for Muslim female flight attendants was discriminatory.
He also suggested that MAS alter the uniforms for Muslim female flight attendants so that they could wear the hijab with it.
Dazma also said Muslim flight attendants should be allowed to opt out of serving alcohol to passengers.
He said that the job of serving alcohol could be handled by non-Muslim flight attendants.

McDonald’s has closed a restaurant in the Moscow Region and two in the city of Sochi on orders from Russia’s consumer rightsregulator, raising the number of suspended stores to eight, the company said in a statement late Thursday.
On August 20, the Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare Oversight stopped operations of three McDonald’s restaurants in Moscow due to violations of sanitary legislation. On August 25, the service suspended operations of the company’s restaurant in the Stavropol Region.
Later the service suspended two restaurants, located in the Stavropol Region and in Yekaterinburg over violations disclosed during checks.
The service has been checking McDonald’s restaurants since August 21.
Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich has said that the Russian authorities do not plan to suspend operations of McDonald’s restaurants in the country.
"Observant Muslims do not go to "McDonalds" restaurants, because of the fact that they do not serve halal meat. We have no need in American McDonalds. This move of the government will give Russian businessmen who have pure intention to serve people with natural products"- said the chief editor of Islam.ru website Muhammad Rajabov.

Locked up in a Nevada prison since 2008 and denied a recent appeal, O.J. Simpson has turned to religion and is embracing Islamwith plans to become a Muslim.
The National ENQUIRER reports that Simpson, 67, became interested in the religion through fellow inmates and was even put in touch with former pro boxer Mike Tyson, who is devout Muslim.
“O.J. really thought that he was going to be successful in a bid for a new trial and eventually be released from prison,” an insider told The ENQUIRER.
''But now he's not eligible for parole until late 2017, which has angered him.''
The disgraced 67-year-old star has become interested in the religion through his friendship with former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, who was imprisoned in the early 1990s and is a devout Muslim.
Simpson has been studying the Koran but failed to successfully fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
An inside said: ''O.J. didn't quite make it through the entire fasting process.
''He cheated during the day, and bought snacks from the prison canteen. But he's really serious about converting to Islam. O.J. even made himself a prayer rug for his prison cell. He really likes the idea that upon converting to Islam, all of his previous sins are forgiven. O.J. has a lot to be forgiven for.''

No Burkinis! Morocco hotels ban ‘halal’ suit

Several Moroccan resorts in the tourist city of Marrakesh have issued new regulations, banning the use of modest burkini in their private pools over what they called “hygiene reasons”.

Only “ordinary swim-suits” are permissible, Mazagan beach resort, located in al-Jadida which is south of the economic capital Casablanca, told Al Arabiya News.

The officials of the resort added that burkinis are not allowed to be worn in the resort’sswimming pools.

The burkini is derived from the words burqa (a head-to-ankle dress) and bikini, resembles a wetsuit with built-in hood.

The two-piece swimsuit incorporates a head covering, a loose-fitting chemise and leggings, was originally designed for Muslim women to help them practice swimming.

The outfit was originally imported from Turkey and Morocco.

Described by some as halal swim-suits, the ban on burkini was widely reported in Moroccan media and websites amid expectations to raise controversy in the North African Kingdom.

Local news websites have published posters used by the management of private swimming pools to inform users that the burkini is not allowed.

One posted in Morocco World News came in three languages and says “Burkini not allowed” and “Bathing suits mandatory.”

This is reportedly even the case if the burkini is made of special swimming material.

The issue has already raised political controversy after Abdelaziz Aftati, an MP of the ruling Moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party, sent a complaint to Tourism Minister Lahcen Haddad, after a woman wearing a burkini was reportedly banned from a swimming pool in al-Jadida, according to  Morocco World News.

According to the Moroccan website, Aftati told the press that it is unacceptable to restrict people’s freedom and their beliefs, saying the move signified the “rudeness of the new colonization.”

In 2009, authorities in the Norwegian city of Oslo allowed Muslim women to use municipal swimming pools with their burkinis.

The Muslim swimming dress is also allowed in Australia, Britain and the United States.

A distinctive feature of the culinaryachievement in Tatarstan was the fact that it was used exclusively halal meat of the corresponding norms of Islam.

The Saudi Haj ministry is proposing to limit the validity of Umrah visa to a maximum of 15 days’ stay in the kingdom.
If the ministry goes ahead with theproposed legislation, Umrah pilgrims will only be able to stay in the country for a maximum of 15 days. With a major expansion going on in Haram, Saudi Arabia has been endeavouring to limit the number of pilgrims.
According to a report in the daily Al-Madinah, the proposal has been communicated to Umrah companies as they have been asked to send their opinion within a week.
Under the proposed rules, the service-providing companies have also been advised against bringing in large batches of Umrah pilgrims at any one time, especially during Ramazan.
The ministry said that after receiving the observations and remarks of the companies, it would draft new rules that will be implemented from the next season, which starts in December. In this regard, Haj Minister Bandar Hajjar met in Madinah on Sunday the government and private sector companies in charge of the Umrah pilgrims.
Some 1.3 million foreign pilgrims are expected to perform Haj in October this year. South Asian countries are expected to send the largest contingent of 410,000 pilgrims followed by Arab countries with 250,000.

1.3 million Muslims from abroad to perform Haj

More than 1.3 million foreign pilgrims are expected to perform Haj this year, according to the Haj Ministry.

More than 1.3 million foreign pilgrims are expected to perform Haj this year, according to the Haj Ministry. South Asian countries will send the largest contingent of 410,000 Hajis followed by Arab countries with 250,000.
About 228,000 pilgrims will come from Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia and Malaysia, while Turkey and European countries will send 190,000, non-Arab African countries 170,000 and Iran 63,000.
Saad Al-Qurashi, a member of the National Haj & Umrah Committee, said about 150,000 domestic pilgrims, including expatriates, would perform Haj this year. “Among them 41,000 will benefit from low-cost Haj services,” he told Arab News.
The Tawafa Organization for South Asia, which takes care of pilgrims from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, held a high-level meeting two days ago to review preparations for the annual pilgrimage.
Raafat Badr, chairman of the organization, urged heads of 115 field service groups to extend the best possible services to the guests of God to help them perform their religious duties in comfort.
The Haj Ministry, meanwhile, refuted reports that the government would take the assistance of foreign security companies to manage the annual pilgrimage, the largest gathering of Muslims in the world.
“These are just rumors. There is no need to take the assistance of foreign security companies as reported by some media,” an Interior Ministry source told Asharq Al-Awsat Arabic daily.
A Haj Ministry official emphasized that the Kingdom would employ only Saudi companies to manage Haj affairs.
“All companies we deal with during the Haj season are 100 percent Saudi,” said Hatim Qadi, deputy Haj minister, adding that companies that provide security services are licensed by the Interior Ministry.
Some foreign media reports claimed that the Haj Ministry was planning to appoint a company that cooperates with Israel to provide some services. The report was referring to Al-Majal, which is a Saudi company licensed by the Saudi Commerce Ministry 33 years ago, the Arabic daily said.
Mohammed Al-Othaim, a media expert, said such false reports were aimed at tarnishing the Kingdom’s image and create confusion among pilgrims. “They spread these false information through the social media including Facebook and Twitter using fake names,” he pointed out.

Nearly 200 Hollywood actors and executives, including Sylvester Stallone and  Arnold Schwartzenegger have signed Creative Community for Peace's pro-Israel, anti-Hamas open letter.

“We, the undersigned, are saddened by the devastating loss of life endured by Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza,” the missive states. “We are pained by the suffering on both sides of the conflict and hope for a solution that brings peace to the region.

“While we stand firm in our commitment to peace and justice, we must also stand firm against ideologies of hatred and genocide which are reflected in Hamas’ charter, Article 7 of which reads, 'There is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!' The son of a Hamas founder has also commented about the true nature of Hamas.

“Hamas cannot be allowed to rain rockets on Israeli cities, nor can it be allowed to hold its own people hostage. Hospitals are for healing, not for hiding weapons. Schools are for learning, not for launching missiles. Children are our hope, not our human shields.

“We join together in support of the democratic values we all cherish and in the hope that the healing and transformative power of the arts can be used to build bridges of peace.”

Muslim engineer banned from French nuclear sites

The 29-year-old project manager had been granted access to nuclear installations as part of his job throughout 2012 and 2013.
Source : Frane24 / 25 Aug 2014
A Muslim engineer working for a firm subcontracted by ×French energy giant EDF has been banned from accessing ×Frenchnuclear sites where he normally works, a move his lawyer says is “pure Islamophobia”.
The 29-year-old project manager had been granted access to nuclear installations as part of his job throughout 2012 and 2013.
But in March 2014 the engineer, who cannot be named according to ×French law, had his pass to enter the Nogent-sur-Seine nuclear power station revoked without explanation.
The decision, made by the local administration, was covered by “Secret Defence” – which means the authorities are not required to publicly justify the decision.
“My client worked freely in French nuclear power stations for three years,” said his lawyer×Sefen Guez Guez, who works with France’s Anti-Islamophobia Collective (CCIF), to FRANCE 24. “The question now is what changed? Overnight, he became a suspect person and no one has any idea why. That’s what we’re trying to get to the bottom of.”
As far as the lawyer is concerned, “considering the current atmosphere in ×France, his religious leanings cannot be ruled out” as a reason behind the ban.
In June 2014, Guez Guez successfully had the engineers ban revoked by an appeals court. The judge ruled that, “there were serious doubts over the legality of the decision”.
But when the engineer turned up for work in ×July, he found he was once again refused access – this time by EDF – to his place of work.
‘It’s like Guantanamo’
Guez Guez launched a second appeal. The court is due to make its ruling at the end of August.
“My client is confident,” he told FRANCE 24. “He has never done anything amiss at work, he is not facing any disciplinary issues with EDF and he has no criminal record.”
While he waits for the courts verdict, the engineer has been assigned to administrative work.
“He’s been sidelined for no reason,” said Guez Guez. “It’s like Guantanamo. How can an employee in France be forbidden from doing his work without being able to defend himself and not even knowing what he has supposed to have done wrong?”
The case is not isolated an incident.
In January, a court in ×Nice in south-eastern France twice overturned work bans imposed by the police on a Muslim worker at the city’s busy airport. The judge in that case ruled that the police decision “had no precise or justifiable material basis”.
