Around 20,000 people die from obesity-related disease annually, studies have shown.
Experts predict an increase in diabetes in children owing to soaring obesity levels among both minors and adults.
More than 3 million people in the ×Kingdomare obese despite government efforts to curb the phenomenon by introducing healtheducation programs at schools.
The Saudi Sugar and ×Endocrinology Societyin the ×Eastern Province has warned against the rising levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes, which affects a quarter of the population.
“This disease is threatening public health, as well as the Saudi national economy, as is the case with many countries,” the society said in a statement.
“There are 1.7 billion obese people globally,” said society sources. “Such figures place a heavy financial burden on countries, with rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, brain strokes and all types of cancer.”
The society has demanded the implementation of immediate measures to curb obesity, including long-lasting lifestyle changes.
